Quality colts secured at the Coast
at the Coast
18 January 2022
The 2022 edition of the Gold Coast Magic Millions sale set the scene for what looks to be another record-breaking yearling sales series. It was a tough buying market, but I was delighted to purchase four strapping colts with DGR’s trusted trainers in QLD, NSW, VIC and SA.
Chris Anderson and I partnered on day 1 to secure Lot 31, a colt by a sire we have enjoyed joint success with; Smart Missile. Bought for $55,000 from Hopetoun Farm’s draft, he is a robust and athletic style of colt out of a sprint-winning Pins mare. He’s very typical of the breed and could be the next Group winning, $600k earner for us, just like Ballistic Boy.
Later in the day, Phillip Stokes and I went to $330,000 to secure Lot 123, a head-turning Almanzor colt bred by leading New Zealand nursery, Waikato Stud. Purchased from Sledmere Stud’s draft, he is an excellent example of the quality Almanzor throws in his stock and has inherited his Savabeel dam’s rich brown colour. Limited ownership opportunities are available.
After inspecting the first crop yearlings by 5-time Group 1 winner, The Autumn Sun, I was on a mission to take one home, so I was pleased to purchase Lot 234 for $280,000 with trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.
He is reminiscent of his sire with plenty of rein, depth and class. In addition to being a terrific physical, he has an excellent pedigree being out of an Encosta mare who is a 3/4 sister to the dam of G1 VRC Australian Guineas winner Alligator Blood and a 1/2 sister to Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy.
To complete my purchases of the sale, I was very taken by Lot 781, a colt from the first crop by Group 1 winner Neorealism. Bought in conjunction with John Thompson for $225,000, he presented as a complete athlete and his Japanese/Golden Slipper pedigree was very appealing.
Now back in Sydney, it’s time to look towards the next on the card, the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Again, I welcome all enquiries, so please get in touch if you want to buy or get involved in one of DGR’s purchases.
