It was fantastic to be back on New Zealand soil, attending their premier yearling sale once again. This event remains close to my heart, having sourced champions like So You Think, First Seal, and Norzita—among many other exceptional racehorses through this very sale ring.

This year, trusted DGR trainer John Sargent and I carefully selected three yearlings, each representing outstanding value in their respective price brackets. We look forward to watching them progress through the ranks of what we anticipate will be highly successful racing careers.

Our first purchase was undoubtedly the bargain of the sale—a striking Proisir colt out of the Fastnet Rock mare Rockabye Lady. He was bought for just $40,000 from Hallmark Stud, the same elite nursery that produced Proisir’s multiple Group 1-winning Champion Middle Distance Horse Prowess. With only 10% ownership remaining, he won’t be available for long.

The Proisir half-sister to our very own 2024 G1 VRC Oaks runner-up Powers of Opal was one of the jewels of the sale, and Sarge and I contested heavy competition to secure her for $700,000 from Curraghmore Stud. 

We’re thrilled to have added another filly of this calibre to the ranks and it came as no surprise that her ownership was fully subscribed before the day was out.

The winning connection continued into our final purchase of the sale— an athletic colt by proven sire Toronado from a winning half-sister to former DGR Karaka purchase So You Think. He’s the ultimate package and with only 5% remaining, you will need to get in quick!
