Derby colt bred on the magic Tavistock/Zabeel cross and a brother to The Irishman. Purchased by DGR for NZ$200,000 from Cambridge Stud’s Karaka Book 1 draft.
Trained by Peter & Paul Snowden, Randwick
The second to last crop of yearlings by proven Derby sire Tavistock were the highest on our list of target horses to buy from the 2021 Karaka Yearling Sale.
We have some very nice three-year-old’s and unraced two-year-old’s by Tavistock in training back in Australia and were keen to secure further ammunition to add to the team. The addition of this colt (and one other from Karaka) gives DGR a lovely spread to gain wins in some feature races for quite a few years to come.
Purchased by DGR for NZ$200,000 from the leading nursery at Cambridge Stud, this colt is out of the young Zabeel mare Zeranti. She has left one foal to race for one winner, this being this colt’s full brother, The Irishman (3YO).
The Irishman was impressive on debut in New Zealand, and following a brave performance in the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m) for second place, he was sold for a large offer from Hong Kong, where he will continue his career after initially being purchased from this sale in 2019 for NZ$170,000.
Before departing to Hong Kong, the new ownership group raced him in Sydney over the recent Autumn Carnival, where he shot away to win in his Australian debut. He then recorded second placings in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes and G3 Carbine Club Stakes.
This colt’s sire Tavistock has cemented himself as a dominant sire of Classic horses. He has a proven affinity when mated with Zabeel mares with the cross running at 17% stakes-winners/runners for colts.
Group One winners bred on the same cross as this colt include 2020 VRC Derby winner Johnny Get Angry, Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther, Champion 3YO Colt in Australia Tarzino and Australasian Oaks winner Toffee Tongue.
He will be trained by top Sydney trainers Peter and Paul Snowden at Randwick.
This horse is now fully subscribed.
Duncan's Comments
“When it comes proven matings, you can't fault the cross of Tavistock over Zabeel mares. The results are truly phenomenal and with a strike rate of 17% stakes-winners/runners for colts, we were determined to secure this colt.”
